Consumer Codes for Homebuyers

A new home built by a developer registered with Premier Guarantee, and covered by a New Homes Warranty, will be covered by one of two consumer codes - the Consumer Code for Home Builders (CCHB) and the New Homes Quality Code (NHQC)

What these codes do for you

The Consumer Code for Home Builders and The New Homes Quality Code aim to make the process of buying a home transparent, supportive and fair to you.

That includes guidance instructing developers to:

    • Offer you reliable information before, during, and after your purchase of a new home
    • Treat you fairly during the home buying process
    • Maintain high standards of customer service through staff training
    • Ensure you have access to free, independent help if a dispute arises

The CCHB has been in place since 2010 and Premier Guarantee was a founder member. It applies to over 95% of new-build homes in the UK. Consumer complaints about breaches of the Code are managed through a government-sponsored contact centre.

The CCHB is independently accredited by the government-approved Consumer Codes Approval Scheme, administered by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute.

More information can be found on the Consumer Code for Home Builders (CCHB) website.

The NHQC is managed by the New Homes Quality Board, an organisation that operates independently from warranty providers. Developers register with the Board and, once they activate their registration, they are required to follow the Code’s rules and standards.

More information can be found on the NHQC website.

Do you feel that you have been treated unfairly?

If your new home is covered by Premier Guarantee, and subject to a New Homes Warranty, your new home’s developer will adhere to one of the codes described above.

Should you have a complaint about the process of the sale of your house that has not been addressed by the builder or developer of your home, you should contact the relevant code.

This information will be available through your builder or developer, if it hasn't already been provided through a welcome pack supplies when you bought the home.

The specific process for an enquiry will vary based on the code relevant to your home, and can be found on the websites linked above.
